mexican-alien-jazz-enthusiast:
Ok, I was born with a physical disability called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita and growing up I never really saw anyone else with my disability. As I got older, I started looking up people but they all lived far away. It wasn’t until I found a support group as an adult but something was off. Around 90% of the members were middle class white people, very few PoC, their families were financially stable enough to get the proper help. They have a convention every year but it’s really expensivr and I don’t have the money to travel. I couldn’t relate to them even though we were born with this disability. My narrative isn’t like theirs, I didn’t fit in I guess. As a poor PoC with a disability, it’s important to me to see the intersectioality of race, class and gender in the disability community. June 30th is Arthrogryposis Awareness Day and I want to create a hashtag #pocwarthrogryposis so other PoC with Arthrogryposis can tell their narratives and be visible. To connect with others because I know how hard it is to find others like you. Please help me spread this.
I don’t know if any of my followers have Arthrogryposis, but if you do, could you spread the word?
