ICYMI in Ferguson (12/1/14): Several St Louis Rams players showed their solidarity with Ferguson protesters as they took the field, displaying the now iconic “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” gesture. The head of the St Louis Police Association, cop killer apologist/defender Jeff Roorda (really, there aren’t enough unpleasant things to say about him), was outraged by the salute, and is calling for the players to be disciplined. The Rams won themselves some new fans today, Roorda be damned! #staywoke #farfromover

The only request Mike Brown’s family made, aside to call for peace, is to urge for a campaign to ensure body cameras on every cop.

This is my letter – it’s going in an envelope and to my representative(Karen Bass) today. You can find your representative here.

Dear <representative>,  

I am one of your constituents. In light of the events in Ferguson, I am writing to urge you to support legislation that will fund and require tamper proof recording devices to be worn by police officers.

A recent Wall Street Journal article stated that –

“…in Rialto, Calif., where an entire police force is wearing so-called body-mounted cameras, no bigger than pagers, that record everything that transpires between officers and citizens. In the first year after the cameras’ introduction, the use of force by officers declined 60%, and citizen complaints against police fell 88%.”

While there are many issues surrounding privacy and surveillance that arise in the use of these technologies, I believe that any legislation introduced to further discussion of methods to ensure greater transparency and accountability in police interactions is a step in the correct direction.

Apparently, in an attempt to paint Michael Brown as anything less than innocent, people have been spreading an image of an armed 17-year-old Joda Cain around the web and claiming that it’s Michael Brown.

Joda Cain is accused of murder in my home state of Oregon, and has literally jack shit to do with the Michael Brown murder in Ferguson, Missouri. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME PEOPLE. Anyone using the above image as “proof” that Michael Brown “deserved” to be shot should be called out for defamation, and promptly thrown down a spiral staircase. 

The bottom photo is the real Michael Brown. He was called a “gentle giant” by friends and family. He was unarmed and innocent, and he was murdered by a police officer after being shot more than five times at close range. Witnesses, including a friend who was with him at the time of the shooting, all agree that he was doing nothing deserving of such violent actions from the officer who gunned him down. 

A reminder, since I’ve seen the image circling again.

  4. THE POLICE PUSH US AS WE ARE LEAVING AND PUSH DOWN THE BARRICADE AND START COMING AT US WITH BATONS 

WE WERE LESS THAN 50 UNARMED TEENAGERS PEACEFULLY PROTESTING AND 200 COPS CAME SWINGING WITH BATONS. OUR ONLY WEAPONS WERE OUR VOICES AND CARDBOARD SIGNS YET THEY STILL ATTACKED BECAUSE OUR TRUTH THREATENED AND SCARED THE POLICE THAT MUCH. 

THIS IS THE AMERICA WE LIVE IN. I DIDN’T WANT TO BELIEVE IT BUT IT’S TRUE. 

WAKE UP EVERYONE.
