a psa for people attending rallies and demonstrations in Canada tonight, since all links I’ve seen so far deal with American law (understandably), just take note of the fact that if anyone tries to stop you from assembling or if a cop tries to take you aside, quote that your right to peaceful assembly is protected under section 2 b,c,and d of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. These three sections guarantee you the right to peaceful assembly, free speech, opinion, and expression, as well as the freedom of association. you are under no obligation to go anywhere with, or be interviewed by a cop – ask if you are being arrested. if they say no or don’t answer, you have the right to walk away. if you are being arrested, ask why and also you can refuse to say or do anything until you have a lawyer.

stay safe!

On a serious note…

Ferguson Municipal Library remains open and ready to welcome the public, including the many children for whom school was cancelled this week. If you are safe and warm where you are, and worried about this little city that is hurting right now, please consider a donation of any size to the library. Link is in upper right corner. Let’s do what we can to spread some joy and support today.

Ferguson Municipal Library

One more boost after a day full of kindnesses and calm.

theres mounds of folks calling out the anarchists in Ferguson

LTMC: The media will spin this as the Black community of Ferguson being uncivilized brutes who simply want any excuse to riot.  When in reality, much of the violence is coming from two sources: (1) small groups of individuals—some politically motivated, others not—using the Ferguson protests as an excuse for aggressive behavior, and (2) overly aggressive police antagonizing crowds of protesters, thereby introducing violence to non-violent situations.

Fellow white/white-passing folks, spread the truth. Please!

people who say to “get off the internet and make a real change” baffle me???? without the internet we wouldnt even have known mike browns name until maybe a week after his murder??? we would be so extremely limited in our knowledge about anything??? what do you even want me to do??? run out into the night and kick a tree???

there were 1.4 MILLION tweets about the murder of mike brown in ferguson before mainstream media even MENTIONED it

ohthathector:

they’re hoping you forget. they hope everyone will go back to their normal routine and enjoy the holidays like nothing happened. michael brown’s parents lost their son. this isn’t something that will pass with time. never forget mike brown, don’t let this decision give every other police officer out there an excuse.

things you can do tomorrow

shinjiikari:

  • wear black or make some change in your wardrobe in honor of mike. wear a ribbon, wear a pin, something. be prepared to explain why.
  • you know those quotes going around from to kill a mockingbird? print them out. post them in hallways and bathrooms and anywhere you can find space. make posters and cover your school walls.
  • start a discussion in your history class, your current events class, bring it up and don’t let others forget it
  • don’t stand for the fucking pledge

okay, fuck this to kill a mockingbird quote bullshit—

respect the words pouring out from black lives

post up black words

Need a few?

  • “In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience. The United States has none.” – Stokely Carmichael
  • “They cripple the bird’s wing, and then condemn it for not flying as fast as they.”— Malcolm X
  • “A system cannot fail those it was never meant to protect” – W.E.B. Du Bois

You’re welcome. There are hundreds of thousands of other quotations you can choose from.
