the delay where you think it might be possible that the tree will survive and then…nope

Fantastic video! And it perfectly illustrates why you never rest under a tree during a lightning storm. Not for risk of electrocution, but because of the tree. When lightning struck the tree, all of the sap inside of it boiled spontaneously – that’s what caused the tree to explode. So you’re more likely to be injured by shrapnel, boiling hot sap, and/or have stuff fall on you than be electrocuted.

I just realized that the specific reason the 80s and 90s anti-racism preaching in the media failed is because it was entirely focused on emotions and bullying and self esteem, and now everyone thinks the only thing that racism affects is people’s feelings.

but in reality, personal emotions about one’s self are the FINAL, smallest, most individual, personal step in what racism does. it ALSO does so much astronomically more than that, and anyone who’s experienced it knows that on some level. it’s institutional; it’s woven inextricably into the fabric of not only our country, but our global system, too. and people are utterly blind to that.

popular culture still suggests that racism is wrong JUST because saying racist stuff hurts people’s feelings, and not because it’s a cultural attitude that informs every level of how our society operates; there is little awareness that racism is about ACTIONS, actions with no conscious intent behind them, not beliefs, which are intangible.

and now that the alt-right has popularized the idea that feelings are objectively stupid, there’s no longer ANY reason not to say racist things. because who cares about hurting other people’s FEELINGS? that’s the very last, smallest, most individual, personal thing you can possibly care about! 🙄

that’s why people are convinced nowadays that a public figure with wide-reaching influence can say racist things unapologetically without “being” racist. because to them, “being racist” isn’t the same as ACTING RACIST. It’s some internal belief—some character flaw—that only crazy people have, and if you’re ironic enough about it, there’s suddenly no harm in being openly racist for laughs.

when the truth is, ACTIONS MEAN MORE THAN BELIEFS. virulent racists are created and enabled by an almost unfathomably massive system of laws and conventions and tradition and lies that people tell themselves and each other. on a global scale.

people think racism is a thing people believe but somehow NOT a thing people DO.

it’s crazy that im alive to witness major effects of climate change. like it always seemed super vague and it was always ‘the polar bears won’t have anywhere to live’ but this shit is going to fuck everything up bigtime.

Most people don’t realize how serious it is. We’ve only got 50 years worth of resources left, if we keep going the way we are, and honestly, that’s optimistic. Aside from that, we’ve already gone over the calculated “point of no return”, so even if we immediately start sucking gasses out of the atmosphere and stop all transport and agriculture, we’re going to see oceans rise, sea life die, we’re going to be crammed into smaller land areas, places like Melbourne will be underwater, and the fallout will probably send us into an ice age anyway (long story, but basically the ice melts, cold water sinks, the ocean flow responsible for thermoregulation of the planet is interrupted, cue ice age).

I can already see it now. Forget the hurricanes for a moment:

-Hay isn’t growing at the right time. Last year, no one got good hay where I live, because the weather (which has been in the same pattern during hay season for as long as I’ve been alive) was whacked out.

-None of my animals grew coats correctly, because the weather is just all wrong, and they don’t know what season they’re in.

-We’re getting new temperature records globally; basically, all weather is starting to change already

-Where I live, there are always two weeks where we see echidnas everywhere, and then we don’t see them the rest of the year. that is, until last year, when we barely saw them, spaced throughout several months.

-Let me reiterate, the animals cannot tell what season it is because climate change is altering weather patterns that have been here for as long as anyone can remember

-We also have more acidic rain due to all the gasses, which is why we’ve got so many statues and whatnot corroding even though they haven’t changed for thousands of years

-We had a tornado start to form in Melbourne. That’s unheard of.

We have the technology to slow down climate change. If we want to survive for more than 50 years, we need to act now. NOW. We need to put in place all the technologies we have, and pour money into more scientific research.

And why haven’t we? Because politicians earn money from oil companies and don’t care about the future of the planet, because they’re not going to be here in 50 years anyway.

https://www.skepticalscience.com/ is a great website that debunks common myths about climate change! check it out! it has a wealth of information that’s super easy to understand and even comes in different levels in terms of learning.

i just recently sat in a climate change presentation and the physicist who gave the presentation talked about how if in the next 30 years we (not just Americans, but humans all over the world) do not cut down on carbon emissions (and this honestly boils down to policy changes that MUST be made amongst industrialists in “developed countries” but that’s a whole other conversation) climate change will ultimately become irreversible.

30 years y’all. that’s within all of our life times. and these effects are going to be pretty much the end of human civilization as we know it.

It’s time for people who will not live to see the consequences of their actions to give way to those of us who will. It’s time for those of us born in the shadow of climate change to stand up and start demanding our stake in the future be recognized as larger and more important than the greedy old men who don’t expect to be around that long.

Media portray these tales of perseverance as uplifting and inspirational. They’re actually horror stories.

These four examples all come from just the past five months, but there are countless additional articles and segments that share the same lessons about never giving up, going the extra mile, and taking care of others. The articles are framed to make you feel good, to illustrate the kindness of others, to show you that things can work out when tragedy hits, and yes, to “restore your faith in humanity.” These are excellent messages that we could probably all benefit from having in our lives, but there’s one thing that gets left out on an all-too-regular basis: the underlying causes.

twitter is incredible

oh man:

she didn’t lose her internship because “her friends” used a hashtag, she lost it because a bunch of 4chan fuckers found out she’s trans and decided to doxx her and harass her employer about the ~image~ she was sending. like this wasn’t her public face account, she wasn’t spouting racist garbage, she mistook someone in her mentions for one of the randos she gets regularly harassed by (because, yknow, if someone tweets “language” at you on twitter, 99.9% of the time they’re not actually concerned for you) and transphobes used the opportunity to fuck up her life. it’s great that hickam is behind her on this but a lot of people are sharing this and laughing at how hilarious it is that “a furry got fired for swearing”, which is the smokescreen being used to cover how this was doxxing a trans woman to ruin her potential career

When someone disagrees with you online and demands you prove your point to their satisfaction by writing a complete and logically sound defense including citations, you can save a lot of time by not doing that.

Bro, I’ve known you for twelve seconds and enjoyed none of them, I’m not taking homework assignments from you.

This got a lot of responses from people pointing out that evidence is a key part of intellectual inquiry, discourse, and debate.  That being able to support your beliefs is a key critical thinking skill.  Which is 100% true.

Except that you don’t actually have to participate in intellectual discourse any time some fucko on the Internet tells you to.

There’s a vast difference between “this is an important thing to be able to do,” and “this is a thing that you must be continuously available to perform in public for any stranger who asks.”

It’s important people read and understand this.

quick protip: if someone is crying or freaking out over something minor, eg wifi not connecting, can’t find their hat, people talking too loud, do NOT tell them how small or petty the problem is to make it better. they know. they would probably love to calm down. you are doing the furthest possible thing from helping. people don’t have to earn expressions of feelings.

I’m just gonna put it out there that if someone’s freaking about something small, they’re really freaking out about something big that they’re trying to deal with, or something long term that’s been building up, and that little thing is the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I don’t know, try and give people the benefit of the doubt. Don’t be the next straw on their broken back.

Needed this today.

People don’t actually go from 0 to 60. If you think they did, you have failed to notice how long they’ve been at 59.

Reasons Why Retail Jobs are Harder than Office Jobs.

And yet people don’t think retail workers should get a living wage. I’ve literally gotten a five cent raise myself.

8 cent raise right here

my direct manager had to fight the district manager for two months to get me a six cent raise

I got a raise of exactly a dime before.

Fuck retail.

HOW TO IDENTIFY A CHILD PREDATOR ONLINE ( Masterpost )

This is a guide to identify code words and symbols used by child predators online. Reblog to keep a minor safe! If you know any other predator code or symbols please let me know so I can add them to this list.

Term: MAP

MAP is an acronym for “Minor Attracted Person/People”. It’s the name of a pedophilic community who has risen on tumblr. It was created in order to assemble Pedophiles, Hebephiles and Ephebophiles. On top of it, the creation of the word is a strategy for them to avoid being identified as predators right away. The community was made to spread positivity about pedophiles and their attraction toward children. The community is very anti recovery.

Note: MAP can also stand for Multi Animator Project. Use context clues and make sure not to attack someone’s project by mistake.

Term: NOP

An acronym that stands for “Non Offending Pedophiles”. Also a community. Pretty much the same thing as the MAP community.

Term: Non Offending

A pedophile who doesn’t interact with children at all or try their best to avoid them. A non offending pedophile does not consume child pornography or medias meant to mimic child pornography ( example: Loli pornography, cartoon child porn, etc ).

A non offending pedophile also doesn’t spread positivity about pedophilia or promotes pedophilia.

NOTE: A lot of pedophiles call themselves Non Offending regardless of whether they offend or not in order to avoid backlash. They will twist words and try to redefine what “offending” means. Keep in mind that a non offending pedophile will do their best to AVOID all contact with children.

A pedophile who purposely interacts with children in ANY way is offending.

Term: CP

Short for Child Pornography.

Note: CP can also be short for Cheese Pizza. Make sure to use context clues before jumping to conclusions.

Term: Sim CP/Child Pornography

A term for simulated child pornography. Simulated child pornography is pornographic medias featuring no real children, but what looks like a child in order to simulate child pornography. It legally counts as child pornography as well. Even thought predators will insist that it isn’t as bad.

Term: AOA

Acronym for “Age Of Attraction”.

A term to define the desired age range of the pedophile’s lover.

Term: Anti/No Contact

A term to describe a pedophile who doesn’t touch children in a sexual manner.

NOTE: No Contact is NOT a synonym of “Non Offending”. Some “no contact” pedophiles might still interact with children, promote pedophilia and watch child pornography.

Term: Pro Contact

A term to define pedophiles or supporters who advocate for sexual relationships between children and adults.

Term: Hebephile

People who are attracted to minors from 11 to 14 years old.

Term: Ephebophile

People who are attracted to minors from 15 to 19 years old.

Term: Virped / Virtuous Pedophile

Also a “non offending” community.

The “MAP” flag

A flag coined by pedophiles on tumblr. They made it on pride month in hope that the LGBT+ community would accept and support them. It didn’t work we don’t want them anywhere near us. Still watch out for that flag in order to identify them.

The “Lesbian MAP” flag.

A flag coined by a pedophile on tumblr who’s a lesbian. Very similar to the MAP flag.

Note: The Lesbian MAP flag highly resemble the Non Binary Lesbian flag. Make sure not to confuse the two because NB lesbians aren’t pedophiles or bad people! Here’s a picture of the Non Binary Lesbian flag:

The Boy Lover Symbol

This symbol, a blue spiraling triangle framed by another triangle, is known as the BoyLover logo, used by adults who prefer young boys.

Note: The term “Boy Love” can also describe a type of media that features a relationship between two boys/men. Make sure to use context clues and not attack mlm/gay men medias on accident. However the symbol/picture is exclusively made for pedophiles.

The Younger Boy Lover Symbol

This symbol is for pedophiles who prefer much younger boys. Known as the LittleBoyLover logo, it is also a blue triangle spiral like the BoyLover logo, but it is drawn in a child-like scraw.

The Girl Lover Symbol

The GirlLover logo is a heart inside a heart, indicated that the pedophile prefers young girls.

Note: The term “Girl Love” can also describe a type of media that features a relationship between two girls/women. Make sure to use context clues and not attack wlw/sapphic/lesbians medias on accident. However the symbol/picture is exclusively made for pedophiles.

The Child Lover Symbol

Pedophiles who do not have a preference of gender use the ChildLover logo, which is a butterfly with four hearts for wings.

The Childlove Online Media Activist Logo

Pedophile promotion symbol: This is the Childlove Online Media Activism logo, which pedophiles use as a symbol to promote their ‘cause’: that sexual relationships between adults and minors should be decriminalized.

The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA)

The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) is a pedophile and pederasty advocacy organization in the United States. It works to abolish age-of-consent laws criminalizing adult sexual involvement with minors and campaigns for the release of men who have been jailed for sexual contacts with minors that did not involve coercion.

Reading through all of this was absolutely disgusting and uncomfortable, but it was equally necessary and educational.
