Spiders are Omnivorous

bogleech:

So for centuries we’ve thought that all spiders – except for just one recently discovered species – were 100% carnivorous with zero interest in or ability to digest anything else.

We JUST NOW suddenly figure out that many spiders, maybe even most or all spiders, will supplement their diet with leaf matter, pollen, nectar, sap or seeds.

Just like that our perception of an everyday animal is turned completely on its head.

It seems to be jumping spiders that enjoy snacking on vegetables the most!

The upcoming Netflix series Sense8 has 8 lead characters. 4 of them are PoC (Mexico, India, Korea and Kenya), the other 4 are white (USA, Iceland, Germany). 4 of them are female, with one being a trans woman actually being played by a trans actress, and one of the men is gay/bi. The show is going to explore gender, religion, sexuality, politics and identity, something most media endeavors tend to ignore.

You’ll find me tuning in on June 5th.

“The plot revolves around eight strangers from different parts of the world who suddenly become mentally and emotionally linked and it is set to explore subjects that its writers felt science fiction shows tend to ignore or skim through such as politics, identity, sexuality, gender and religion.” Wikipedia

Yeaah, I’m definitely going to be watching this.

I auditioned for this! The role I auditioned for was a bit part as a radfem (who I think interacts with the lead trans actress, and it’s made pretty clear that she’s an asshole). I didn’t get the part but am curious to know who did 🙂

Oh my god this sounds amazing

Hey there’s a really great stop motion project going on that I feel would be greatly helped by getting some reach on your blog. It’s called “Junk Head” and it’s all about horrifying sub-human monsters that live under ground after thousands of years of modifying their genes to be immortal. It’s all done by a single artist and she’s already finished a full half hour of it. Tumblr doesn’t allow for links but you can watch it on youtube. It actually heavily reminds me of your mortasheen animations.

The visual sensibilities of so many other surrealist films, but with COHERENT world building and storytelling!? As much as I love bizarre dream-like stop motion shorts that leave a lot to the imagination, it’s SO refreshing to see that kind of aesthetic in something with a focused plot for a chance. For once, we know exactly what we’re seeing, and it’s still entertainingly strange.

Also refreshing is how eerie, grim and dystopian the setting superficially looks while the writing is just fun, lighthearted and sweet. No depressing, pretentious grimdark. Just characters who really look like they’re supposed to be from a horror story and are actually precious, innocent cuties, every one of them. There isn’t even any known “villain” yet.

This is seriously just everything I ever want in entertainment and so rarely get.

HERE IT IS PLEASE LET A FANDOM GROW AND GROW THEY ARE WORKING ON PART 2

i wish birds brought ME presents

No, but think about this.

The crows she feeds obviously have their own little lives. They go about their business, and they spot *pretty thing* or /unique thing/ in question. What gets me is that the *first* thing on their minds as recipient of this thing is the little girl that feeds them.

They spot a thing, and immediately must think, “that nice girl with delicious foodstuffs must have this to show my gratitude.”

It’s actually more than that, though, if you read the articles or watch the videos. This has taken place over YEARS- it started with these birds following this little girl around because she was a messy eater and it has turned into a ritual for the family. They have a water station and food stations where they daily set out things for these birds and sometimes (but not always), these birds leave ‘payment’ behind for the food.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE

These birds are not just taking food and leaving shinies. These birds are watching over this family now. Their lives have become involved. These crows are keeping track of this girl and her mother even when they are out of the yard. How do we know?

One of them is a photographer, and one day while she was photographing some stuff on a bridge, she dropped her camera’s lenscap over the edge. There was no way she could get it back, so she left it. When she got home, the lenscap was sitting on the edge of one of the feeding stations, waiting for her.

Not only were the birds following and watching over her, they were smart enough to realize she dropped an Important Thing and cared enough to bring it back to her.

I could not have asked for more

I have a story to tell.

As with so many of my stories, this one is handed down from my family.  This particular one is for my maternal grandmother.

She was from one of the satellite towns of Lviv, which is now western Ukraine but was at the time eastern Poland.  When the Nazis came, they had already seen the writing on the wall and she, her family and some of their friends had hidden away in a bunker in the forest, and one of their goyishe friends from town came with food (those friends later betrayed them, but, for a time, they were safe).  The bunker wasn’t very big, so they spent as much of their time out of it as they could, and my grandmother would save her crumbs and feed them to this one bird.  She never knew what it was, but, based on her description—and what happened next—I’m thinking it might have been a Eurasian Magpie or other corvid.

And that bird, over time, which had very distinctive plumage, eventually became willing to eat pretty much out of her hands.  The others in the bunker were… skeptical of this, saying that she should eat the crumbs, but my grandmother was a teenaged girl at the time, and quite the strongheaded tomboy, and didn’t listen.

How much of a tomboy?  Well, one day, she was out for a walk away from the bunker when a patrol of Hitler Youth stumbled across her.  A chase ensued, and she tried to lead them away from the bunker.  She was shot at.  She was shot—lost the tip of a finger.  And she lost them in the midst of the forest after a great deal of running.

Of course, now she had no idea where she was, either.

So she sat down to take stock of the situation, trying to figure out what to do, when suddenly there’s this chirp! from next to her on the log.  She looks down, and there’s a rather familiar looking bird there.  She’s thinking to herself, “No, it can’t be…” when the bird hops off the log, flies a few feet, lands, and looks back at her with an expression of “You coming?”

And it leads her, through miles of forest… back to the bunker and her family.

To this day, my family feeds the birds.  🙂

It’s finally here, my Pokemon Variants Fanzine

This is my first zine project and I’m really proud of the work I put into it! It’s printed on 100lb glossy text with 14pt cardstock covers!

In many ways this is just a spiritual successor to my Chandelure Variants on tumblr from august last year, I just took it further as I love pokemon and psuedo-science hehe.

You can buy the Zine alone for $10 or you can get the Zine Bundle that comes with a limited button set with it AND a custom variant sketch of a pokemon of your choice for $30!

If you or anyone you know loves pokemon variants these would make a great gift, and a signal boost would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys for supporting me 😀

Just Pen by Piotr Górski and Agata Zambrzycka

Independence is important for everyone. Unfortunately, for a person with such insignificant disability as the lack of thumb seams to be, life is not easy at all. We learn how to write in the earliest years of our life and it becomes an inherent element of our everyday life. When somebody is suddenly deprived of the opportunity to ordinarily use a writing tool, the disability starts to be inconvenient, it deprives of the independence.

woah, this looks useful for lots of disabilities that affect the hand though.  Like idk, but, maybe EDS?  and if you have hand dexterity problems and holding things is an issue (which can be caused by so many things).  I really want to look into this because writing by hand is so important to me, but, well, holding a pen isn’t the easiest thing ever

Such a simple and brilliant idea (and, as the website tells you too, so much easier to learn than to write with a protheses).

And pretty to boot!

This new app for polyamorous relationships isn’t what you think it is

Think Grindr and Tinder, and you think casual sex. But when it comes to apps for polyamorous people? Not so fast.

Released just last month, The Poly Life is an app aimed at the poly community. But unlike other relationship apps on the market — and unlike what some might assume about polyamory — The Poly Life has nothing to do with hooking up.
