I put together a brief demographics survey for the YW fandom for 2015! This one contains questions on age, location, occupation, religion, education, sexuality, neurodiversity, and race!
All questions are totally optional. All results are anonymous. I’ll post a link to the results in a few days. If you want me to add anything to the questions, just let me know. Really easy to add them.
Also if there are any spelling errors, my apologies. I don’t think my spellcheck is working on google forms for whatever reason.

not 3 rando things but pls talk about harry callahan and the moon
oh is that what you want. is it really
okay let’s go
Three, two, one.
It’s been three years since he first set foot in silver dust while standing in the sky.
It’s been two years since he can’t look up at the Earth’s lone, lovely satellite without knowing he’ll cry.
It’s been one day since he decided it’s time.
He watches his eldest daughter walk across the grass in the backyard and lay a circle of light on the ground, faintly glowing symbols floating just above the myriad imperfect, precious green blades. He’s seen both of his girls do it a hundred times and more by now, but this time, so like the very first time, he is enveloped by a sense of deja vu, although nothing is the same. His hand curls around what’s in his pocket.
Nita turns to look at him. “Ready?” she says quietly.
Never. But he nods.
She speaks, and something that might be true silence and might be every sound in the world at once wraps him up and delivers him through space and time to a rocky, silvery-white surface in a gentle puff of dust.
Nita says something else in that flowing language that he almost understands, then looks at him. “You’ve got an air bubble five feet around that’ll follow you. Up to two hours if you need it. Page me when you’re ready to go; I’ll be in that crater.” She points at the craggy rim of a huge crater miles and miles away, then vanishes.
He looks up at the burning half-full Earth in the sky, and sits himself down on a rocky outcrop with a sigh. For a time, he sits there, elbows on his knees, hands cupped around a small, light stone that matches his surroundings. The one that Betty had picked up here that day, so long ago. It had sat in the dish cabinet, on the coffee table, on the DVD rack, and various other places since then.
He rubbed his fingers over the rough stone once more, then gently tucked it into a crack in the outcrop he sat on. He patted the outcrop with the palm of his hand.
“If I were one of those Greek gods,” he whispered hoarsely, “I’d have made you into the most beautiful constellation that ever danced across the sky.” The muffled silence of space seemed to listen.
“But I’m only a mere florist. I hope this is good enough.”

I don’t remember what your tumblr username is, fabulous author, please remind me!by tumblr user sunrisenebula!)Send me three random things, I’ll make them into a minific or a headcanon jam or something weird (probably tomorrow, I have to sleep soon!)
YOU FUCKING TURNED THE LINE FROM MY OWN FIC AROUND ON ME AND MADE ME CRY EVEN MORE HOW DARE YOU
i ain’t even mad that was actually a really brilliant move and this was beautiful and painful and WOW
HOW DARE U MAKE ME CRY LIKE THIS
I wonder if oaths of office in astahfrith societies are based on the Oath
Really it makes sense as a thing
Swearing by life that you will guard growth and ease pain, in the ways that don’t involve talking the universe into things but instead talking Congress into things
Which is prolly harder than talking air solid so uh
tatterpig replied to your post: dear code, what do you think you …
perhaps a more dairine callahan approach, which is this approach but with swearing
depends on when we’re talking.
baby!programmer dairi would have not so much swearing as “you WILL work because i say so or so help me i will make you regret it”
junior-wizard!programmer dairi would have much of the same in the Speech until the first time the computer actually took offense and turned itself off mid-compile. (it refused to cooperate until she had apologized profusely and explained that she wasn’t actually annoyed with the computer, she recognized that it was merely doing its job.)
high school!hacker dairi would indeed be much of the same but with more swearing. (she learned early on not to code while harry was in earshot—she was legitimately convinced that his eyebrows would literally disappear into his head if she wasn’t careful.)
at some point nita gets her a rubber duck as a joke. (it looks like darth vader. nita finds this absolutely hilarious for reasons that are unclear to dairine.) she refuses to acknowledge it at first, but after one awful all-nighter that duck becomes the best-educated programming duck the worlds have ever seen. it’s a good listener, and feels important when things work out and dairi praises it to high heavens. she’s not convinced that it doesn’t understand half of what she’s saying, anyway.
headcanon that wizard’s programming rubber ducks tend to develop a weird amount of sentience over time.

Included a version without the fire because dammit I spent forever on the hands and they deserve to be seen without fire covering them. >.>
I wouldn’t be afraid of spiders if I could just talk to them, you know?
Me: Oh, hey whoa, this shower is occupied.
Spider: Omg man I didn’t see you there.
Me: We cool?
Spider: Yeah, yeah, we’re cool. I’m just coming down to scope out the tub.
Me: Oh, that’s legit. Hey, you might wanna move over some–you’re descending right into the shower stream and I don’t want you to drown.
Spider: Hey thanks, bud. I’ll be careful.
Me: So…can I get out now?
Spider: Sure, sure! Sorry I’ll just move over here.
Me: Thanks. You have a nice night. Don’t come into my bedroom, okay?
Spider: Nah, that’s your space. We’re cool. Have a great evening.
CrossingsCon 2016 is a go!
As you may have already heard, our Indiegogo campaign hit $6000 last night, meaning we’re fully funded and the convention is happening! Before the night was done we’d already raised $200 beyond our goal, meaning that we’re also well on our way to our first stretch goal, Mark Oshiro!
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped get us to this point—we truly couldn’t have done it without you (and it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as fun). There’s still ten days left in our campaign, so if there are any perks you’ve had your eye on, or else if you just haven’t had a chance to donate yet but want to, you can still do that.
This also means our challenge goal has been exceeded, after being announced less than a day prior. Good job, cousins! Information on when the reward (as well as the previous one from our last challenge) will go live will be posted in the next few days.
Until then, thanks once again for encouraging us in our crusade to host a Young Wizards convention, and hopefully we’ll see some of you there next year!
(Confused? We’re planning the first ever Young Wizards convention and just hit our fundraising campaign goal thanks to the dedication and kindness of the YW fandom. Find out more here.)
Those airport announcements that say “all passengers must control their bags at all times” make me think of the Crossings and grin. I know what they mean but isn’t it more fun to think about it… “Keep an eye or three on your luggage so it doesn’t wander off, ok? We’re tired of dealing with people’s forlorn lost suitcases following our staff around!”
Campaign Challenge #1
Okay, cousins, we’ve just reached $1500 for our campaign (!!!) and nearly 60 contributors, so I think it’s time for a challenge:
If we break either (1) $2000 or (2) 100 contributors in the next ten days, I (Claudia Aka robotamputee) will upload an out-takes video of me filming my “Reasons Why I Want A Young Wizards Convention” bit from our pitch video. Not to brag or anything, but it’s pretty hilarious. Also, my cat makes a cameo, and I know we’ve got our fair share of cat-lovers in the fandom.
So, if you were planning to contribute but hadn’t gotten around to it yet (or, alternatively, if you haven’t pimped us out to your friends/family/colleagues recently), now’s the time! Even if we just get 40 people donating $1 each I’ll upload the video! I’ll be posting periodic updates throughout the week, but make sure to check back here on the 21st to find out if we made it, and (if we did) to see why I’m excited for CrossingsCon!
In the meantime, dai cousins, and, as always, happy backing!
I am.
I belong to the earth, the sea, the sky, and the sun
And I feel
And I know
That I AM a child of this earth
A crucial, trivial part of this universe
And I shall not give the darkness power over me
I defy the darkness power over me.
