I think it’s super important to help poor people today to have a decent life but stopping there keeps them dependent for life and doesn’t fix the issue of widespread poverty. Giving someone a cough drop may reduce the pain temporarily but it doesn’t help cure the cold. We need to create more widespread low income housing, fix the education system, fix mental/physical health services and create better welfare systems.

Jury nullification. Pass it on.
Jury nullification is so fucking important.
This is something that more people should be aware of, if only because (in many states, at least) defense attorneys are actually prohibited from mentioning it to jurors. The law allows a jury to return a “not guilty” verdict contrary to the facts of the case, but not for the defense to inform them of that power or to argue for its application in the current trial.
I didn’t know about this. Wow.
always reblog
This is SUPER IMPORTANT and also a good reason to show up for jury duty. You know all those laws you think are stupid? This is your chance to maybe do something about it.
I…. I thought this was common knowledge… signal boosting this because it obviously isn’t!
Did not know this
I’m pretty sure this is true in UKvia, too.
Fun fact: They do not tell you this when you’re called for jury duty and sit through the ‘how to be a juror’ instruction course in the state of RI.
Mike Brown was murdered 64 days ago
This is something school lessons really downplay.
I legit thought it only lasted a week or two and was shocked when I learned otherwise.
Because to acknowledge the length of the protests/boycotts is to suggest that the United Stated resisted the right thing. They like to pretend like the country just didnt know what it was doing and only had to be tapped gently on the shoulder before it changed everything. They don’t want people to know that the country clung to its racism for almost a decade after the movement really started. Hell, they act like rosa parks, the million man march and the civil rights act all happened in one year or less. It didnt.
why is “hate breeds more hate” a bad thing to say?
Oh so many reasons.
1) it equates the anger of the oppressed to the hate of their oppressors.
2) it blames oppressed groups for their oppression. Bigotry doesn’t exist because people hate bigots. It exists because oppressed people oppose it. It exists because of bigots and because of privileged folks being complicit or tacitly condoning systems of oppression.
3) it’s fundamentally untrue. Hatred of oppression doesn’t lead to more hatred; it leads to progress.
4) it is used to attack any attempt by oppressed people to obtain liberation. Point out that something or someone is repulsively racist and all of a sudden you’re “breeding more hate”.It’s a fundamental misrepresentation of reality that blames victims and excuses fucked up behavior.
EDIT *before my reply because it’s important* before reading this post I would have had a hard time articulating why “hate breeds more hate” is a weird thing to say to activists. Because, obviously, people hating each other causes lots of bad things. I would have thought it was a weird thing to say, but if someone had said it I would’ve been like “Yeah…I mean…I guess…”
Because the sentence subtly and dismissively shifts the action and opinion of the activist away from the oppression and on to the people they’re arguing with about the oppression. It’s a way of winning an argument by changing the argument..very clever. And I never would have picked up on it without this post.
So, to continue with what I originally wrote…
Hatred of a terrible thing is one of the most wonderful human emotions. Anger at inequality and oppression LITERALLY CREATED AMERICA…smh.
You are homophobic if you only support gay men that act masculine or lesbians who act feminine.
You are monosexist if you only support monogomus pan/poly/bisexuals.
You are racist if you only support black people that dress “respectably”(like white people).
You are sexist if you only support women presenting as feminine (or masculine or androgynous)
You are transphobic if you only support people who transition or have dysphoria.
You are whorephobic if you only support sex workers who are doing it to empower themselves.
You are acephobic if you don’t support aromantic asexuals.
You are classist if you only support poor people who work night and day but are still poor.
You are ableist if you only support autistic people if they have a gift in some field.
If you pick and choose to respect oppressed people by their choices or situation you are not supporting them. supporting an oppressed group means you don’t get to decide which people in the group deserve support.
I’ve noticed something troubling in the agender tag and I know I already made one post about it but I wanted to be more specific this time.
A few blogs have been saying some nasty and/or incorrect things about agender people and to the people who try to correct them.
One of the incorrect things…
if amanda bynes had depression, everyone would be hailing her for being ‘so inspirational’ and ‘lliving with such a tragic illness’
but because she’s schizophrenic, she’s mocked and humiliated by the media and by society for ‘outrageous’ and ‘hilarious’ behaviour she can’t control
this is why it’s dangerous to leave schizophrenia and psychosis out of your disability activism – because people still think it’s okay to say they support people with mental illnesses, but really only mean the mental illnesses they deem ‘normal’ enough to support.
THIS. SUPPORT -ALL- MENTAL ILLNESSES, NOT JUST THE CONVENIENT ONES.
This is your approaching-cold weather reminder that yarn bombing your neighborhood causes litter, can be troublesome for wildlife, and often under-payed municipal workers are forced to clean it up.
If you have that much yarn to use on things you’re not keeping or selling, use it to make scarves, hats, mittens, socks, etc. to donate to local people in need.
THIS. THEY KEEP YARNBOMBING STUFF ON CAMPUS AND IT GETS WET AND MOLDY AND YECCCCH AND MAKES LOCKING YOUR BIKE A PAIN AND A HALF WHEN YOU KEEP TOUCHING MOLDY DEGRADING YARN.
USE THE TIME AND EFFORT TO, GEE, IDK, KNIT FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED IT? GIVE YOUR LOCAL HOMELESS PEOPLE SOCKS OR A HAT OR SCARF OR SOMETHING
support butch lesbians
support flamboyant gay men
support polyamorous bisexuals and pansexuals
support sex-repulsed asexuals
don’t throw people under the bus because they “fit a stereotype” you deem negative that you try to distance yourself from
Don’t ever fucking tell someone with depression or anxiety that their feelings are invalid because you have no fucking idea how many times a day they blame themselves for their mental illness and already feel incredibly guilty and if you’re one of those people invalidating our illness then fuck you
